Studio - HOUSE

FA-AT1Acad. year: 2021/2022

Creative studio work is the main and essential means of teaching architecture. It is based on the “learning by doing” method, i.e. gaining knowledge and skills by practical application. It consists in the dialogue of the teacher with the student over a project that is being developed.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

– The student will acquire the ability to design architectural and functional solutions of simple building (with one or two simple functional circuits).
– The student will know the basic standard requirements for the design of simple buildings and will be able to apply them in the design.
– The student will acquire skills for elaborating documentation of architectural study of simple building.
– The student will be able to choose a suitable construction system for a concrete design of a simple construction.
– The student will be able to understand the context of the site and respond to it in the design of simple construction.

Prerequisites

Prerquisite of enrolment for the subject is the basic knowledge of building construction design and , according to the assignment, also the knowledge of the respective typology

Co-requisites

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The basic teaching method is a studio in which long-term independent work of students is emphasized; an important part is the presentation of the results of their own work on criticisms and presentations and consultations and critical discussions with the supervisor and other experts. Excursions (workshops) may be an additional teaching method depending on the topic.
Teaching methods depend on the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The studio work is assigned and evaluated by the supervisor.
The following design components are evaluated:
– Place, interpretation, analysis, synthesis, idea;
– Processes, operation;
– Materiality, structure, construction;
– Form, arrangement;
– Presentation, adjustment, defence;
– Student's approach to project processing.
The weight of individual components is determined by the supervisor.
It is mandatory to submit the project at the architectural study level, which includes:
– text (including background, analyses, objectives, principles and concept of design, construction and operation diagram)
– documentation of working sketches and photo documentation of working models
– the situation of wider relations
– the situation
– floor plans of individual floors
– sections
– elevations
– spatial representation of the designed object incl. context of the place
– the spatial representation of the interior if appropriate
– model (including photo documentation)
Mandatory attachments can be specified in more detail by the supervisor in the assignment. The assignment must be published on the FA Intranet at the same time as the topic annotations (before students register).
The classification scale is given in Art. 14 of the BUT Study and Examination Regulations. The recommended classification is as follows:
– A: excellent proposal with personal contribution, all aspects and components of the proposal must by excellent
– B: very good proposal or excellent proposal with some partial lacks
– C: good design, craft correct
– D: craftly correct design with partial deficiencies
– E: sufficient design, fulfilment of all assigned tasks, designed object is stable, does not show danger to stability, life and health, meets legislative requirements (standards)
Works that do not comply with the minimum requirements (specified in classification E) are rated as failed.

Course curriculum

The student systematically prepares studio work according to the assignment. Work takes 13 weeks. The student regularly consults the work with the supervisor and other experts.
The framework timetable consists of the following headings:
– location analysis and assignment
– work on concept
– 1st criticism
– work on architectural, functional and construction solutions
– 2nd criticism
– finalizing the project
– work on project presentation
– final public presentation in front of the jury
Schedule incl. deadlines can be specified by the supervisor in the assignment. The assignment must be published on the FA Intranet at the same time as the topic annotations (before students register).

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

The aim of teaching this subject is to prepare the students for solving in local context the architectural design of a medium size building that does not put complex demands on the building's function (one or two functional circuits) and structure.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Obligatory participation in one consultation per week according to the supervisor's specification, obligatory participation in two ongoing criticisms and final public presentation. Submission of the project according to the assignment and within the pre-set deadline for submitting the project.
The specific terms of the above-mentioned compulsory participation, or further compulsory attendance beyond its scope, may be specified in more detail by the supervisor in the assignment. The assignment must be published on the FA Intranet at the same time as the topic annotations (before students register).

Syllabus

Architectural design of a medium size building is documented by:
- plan view, sections and views , scale 1:100
- situation plan, scale 1:200
- possibly, design of internal equipment, scale 1:20
- model
- technical report
Structural solution is represented by a model of structure and by a drawing of the arrangement of elements.
