RISO Lab 1

FaVU-RIS1Acad. year: 2021/2022

Risograph has been relatively little used up until recently when became an increasingly popular high-speed digital printing system based on stencil printing (similar to screen printing technology). Although the machine is very similar to a xerox machine, it works completely differently. It has gained popularity around the world among low-cost printing due to its relatively low acquisition and running costs, speed, and peculiar print quality. It has become a popular printing technique for original prints and posters. Students will gradually, theoretically, and practically, get acquainted with printing on Risograph. They will receive the necessary information about the differences between different printing technologies. They will learn how to create templates and operate the Riso EZ 571E printing machine. The course also includes basic work with Adobe Photoshop software which allows students to create a template from the image template for trapping four colors, and Adobe InDesign, where they will deepen their skills in preparing and exporting a document for printing on Risograph. The main goal of the course is to support students' creative activities in the field of creating low-cost original prints and publications, as well as to provide an assistance in their artistic development.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students learn how to use technology of the digital printer Risograph EZ 571E and a specific way of preparing print data for riso-print. After mastering the practical operation of the machine, students design their own original poster, which they later print in 35 copies in the form of two-color printing.

Prerequisites

Successful completion of courses: Book Binding 1, Book Binding 2, Screenprinting - winter, Screenprinting – summer.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Theoretical lectures, practical examples of prints and publications printed by risograph technology, practical examples of graphic ways of creating templates for printing, discussions, consultations of ideological proposals.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit is awarded based on active participation lessons and submitting practical output (copyright poster).

Course curriculum

1/ Introduction to the technology of printing on the Risograph
2/ Extending general knowledge in the field of digital printing technology
3/ Introduction to the technology of preparing templates for printing
4/ Creating a hand drawing for two-color printing
5/ Production of templates for registration of two colors using digital scanning
6/ Printing with a Risograph printer
7/ Making an original poster

Aims

The aim of the course is a practical acquaintance with the issue of printing technology on the printing device Risograph through practical exercises focused on the two-colors register using a printer. Students will acquire skills in the manual preparation of an image master, and they will learn to practically operate the Riso EZ 571E machine. The output will be a printed two-color author's poster.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Lessons are held in the Faculty of Fine Arts Bookbinding workshop through practical exercises and theoretical lectures. Participation is mandatory (tolerated absence 20%).
