Energy Storage Technologies

Overview of energy storage, thermal and electrical storage. Storage of heat energy. Energy storage based on physical principles - flywheels, PVE, CAES, SMES. Electrochemical storage of energy, basic terms of electrochemistry and electrochemical sources. Lead accumulators, alkaline accumulators, lithium accumulators. Accumulators for special applications. Super capacitors. Fuel cells.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student of MPA-UEO course is able to
- Explain the importance of basic concepts in the field of renewable energy
- Describe the advantages and disadvantages of renewable energy sources
- Design a suitable location for wind power plants in the Czech Republic
- Measure and calculate the properties and characteristics of photovoltaic cell or panel, design the simple autonomous photovoltaic system
- Describe the structure and operating principle of solar collectors, focusing collectors and chemes of different types of solar thermal power plants
- List the different types of energy using of rivers, seas and oceans
- Describe the principle of operation of various geothermal power plants
- Explain the operating principle of a heat pump and classify them according to the used source of low-potential heat
- List the distribution of biomass and its use in energetics
- Describe the principle of controlled thermonuclear fusion and thermonuclear power plant
- Explain the importance of basic concepts in electrochemistry (half-cells, cells, types of electrodes, electrochemical potentials)
- Classify and describe the different types of primary electrochemical power sources 

Prerequisites

The subject knowledge on the Bachelor's degrree level isrequested.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Techning methods include lectures and practical laboratories. Course is taking advantage of e-learning (Moodle) system. 

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

up to 40 points during the semester (15 points from laboratory seminars and 25 points from written test)
up to 60 points from written final exam
Final exam is focused on verification of knowledge and orientation in the field of electrical materials.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide basic information on various types of electrical and thermal energy storage and the possibilities of their deployment.
