Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will know the legislative requirements for machine safety. They can define the types of risks and assessment methods, risk assessment and the use of safety features. Students will be able to use the methodology of PL by EN ISO 13849-1 and SIL according to EN 62061. They can define and propose safety measures to reduce risks. Students will focus on process safety according to relevant standards.

Prerequisites

Knowledge is required at the bachelor's degree in technical field. Furthermore, knowledge of industrial automation and PLC programming are required too.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the teaching methods are described in Article 7 of the Study and Examination Regulations of BUT.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The credit is granted on the following conditions:
1. Lab project and presentation - min. 10 points from 15 points
2. Practical test - max. 15 points.

For exam is subject to the following conditions:
1. Oral part - min. 35 points from 70 points.

Basic lectures relates the following areas:
• Legislative requirements for machinery safety
• Risk assessment and standard EN 12100
• Methodology of PL according to EN ISO 13849-1
• Methodology of SIL according to EN 62061
• Techniques of risk reduction
• Development of safety related software
• Good engineering practices and requirements
• EC declaration of conformity according to Directive 2006/42/EC
• The basics of process safety

Aims

The aim of the course is to give students enough knowledge to be able to understand the principles of the machine safety. The course deals with methodologies for assessing and minimizing risks in accordance with applicable standards. Another aim is to acquaint the students with the issues of process safety. The lab project has focused on risk assessment technology, design, risk minimization, design safety features and their validation.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

There are checking the individual work on assigned tasks and practical test in the lab exercise. There is successful completion of written and oral part of the exam.
