Course detail

General Biophysics

FEKT-BPC-OBFAcad. year: 2021/2022

General biophysics covers the main study areas of general as well as medical biophysics, namely biophysics of membranes, senses, the cardiovascular and respiratory system, laboratory and clinical optical methods, hazards and biophysical interactions of some instrumentation methods including elements of radiobiology. Practical exercises and demonstrations to show the students how to measure non-electric parameters of living organisms, that correspond to the theoretical lessons.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student is able to describe and explain the principle of the influence of physical fields on the human body - at the cellular and organ level. Furthermore, he gains the knowledge from the selected parts of Molecular and Medical Biophysics as specified in the "Outline". In practical exercises, he gains related skills of spectrophotometry, refractometry, polarimetry, conductometry, measuring liquid viscosity, temperature or absorption of ionizing radiation.

Prerequisites

Requires knowledge of the physical fields, i.e. knowledge gained in courses Physics I and Physics II. Furthermore, knowledge of general physical chemistry, i.e. knowledge in biochemistry.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Exam consists of a test and an oral part. More than 14 points out of 25 possible is a requirement for passing the test, oral and overall result is evaluated according to the classification practices LF MU. Exam aims to test knowledge from the the membrane, cell and organ biophysics and also tests knowledge of the impact of physical fields on the human body.

Course curriculum

1. The structure of matter and its biophysical context,
2. Molecular biophysics including basic instrument methods,
3. Biophysics of membranes,
4. Biophysics of sensory modalities (hearing and sight),
5. Organ biophysics (biomechanics of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems,
6. Biophysics of mechanical forces and ultrasound,
7. Microscopy and other selected optical methods,
8. The effect of physical factors on living matter, including medical applications (physical therapy, invasive methods),
9. Overview of the effects of ionizing radiation on living matter.

Work placements

Aims

To offer a review of the main issues of general and medical biophysics with focus on the physiological biophysics and the impact of physical factors on living organisms.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Laboratory exercises are compulsory (absence must be replaced after consultation with the teacher), attendance at lectures is optional.
