Fundamentals of Information and Communication Technologies

The course introduces students to information and communication technologies using practical examples. It provides an overview of the types of connectors and cables for computer networks. The next part focuses on the TCP / IP communication model, the basic installation of operating systems in virtual environments, their network configuration, virtual private network (VPN) configuration, virtual LAN networks, network traffic analysis, and basic server configuration.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course, students acquire a basic overview of passive and active network elements and their advantages and disadvantages. They also acquire practical experience including connecting network cables, installation and configuration of operating systems, network interfaces, components and basic network services.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods include practical laboratories. Course is taking advantage of e-learning (Moodle) system. Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and the Dean's Regulation complementing the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. It is obligatory to work through all laboratory exercises in regular or alternative terms to complete the course.

1. Basic concepts in ICT - repeater, hub, switch, router (TPC / IP model, layers)
2. Description of used connectors (cabling)
3. Addressing in computer networks
4. Available operating systems, differences, advantages / disadvantages
5. Basic tools for network interfaces managing and configuring
6. Virtual Private Networks
7. VLANs, tunnels configuration
8. Wireless WiFi - Basic Architecture, Client / AP
9. Analysis of network traffic
10. Installation and operation of the web server and technologies associated with it
11. Managing servers through a web browser, testing various server services
12. Final test

The aim of the course is to provide students with a deeper awareness of information and communication networks and systems through practical demonstrations.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course annually.
