Source water composition and properties, drinking water quality standards and regulation, water treatment technology trains – basic water treatment processes overview, coagulation and flocculation, water aeration, separation processes, adsorption of organic compounds by activated carbon, removal of specific contaminants, water disinfection processes, wastewater treatment plants, types of WWTP, physical unit operations and chemical unit processes at WWTP, microbiology, hydrobiology of wastewater, sludge management, waste management.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The students obtain insights into different sectors of drinking water treatment processes, waste water technologies, apparatuses and water quality standards, which enable to use the knowledge in both the water treatment practice and research.

Prerequisites

The course requires knowledge of hydrochemistry and physical chemistry.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Lectures 1/week, the e-learning system (LMS Moodle) is available to students.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The materials for the exam preparation are lectures on the e-learning portal. Assessment methods Oral examination. Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes: The course-unit credit is awarded on condition of: 100% attendance at the practice and elaboration of protocols for individual tasks.

Course curriculum

Water treatment technology

1. Source water composition and properties, Water treatment technology trains – basic water treatment processes overview)
2. Coagulation and flocculation (theory and practice basics)
3. Water aeration (theory and practice)
4. Separation processes – sedimentation (theory and practice), flotation (theory and practice), granular media filtration (theory and practice), membranes (theory and practice)
5. Adsorption of organic compounds by activated carbon (theory and practice)
6. Removal of specific contaminants (iron and manganese removal, N compounds removal)
7. Water disinfection processes (chemical and physical disinfection processes)

Wastewater treatment technology and re-use waste water

1. Introduction to wastewater treatment plants (use, types, water facilities, water management, technology)
2. Types of WWTP (Configuration, Individual objects / tanks at WWTP, Basic calculations / parameters for WWTP design)
3. Physical Unit Operations sand Chemical Unit Processes at WWTP (sedimentation, coagulation, flotation, etc.)
4. Microbiology, hydrobiology of wastewater (types of microorganims, composition of wastewater, nutrients, processes in the biological part of the process)
5. Sludge management (sewage sludge cycle, sludge types, sludge treatment and hygiene)
6. Waste management (measurement and control, mathematical modeling)
