Course detail

Biopolymers

FCH-MCO_BIPAcad. year: 2021/2022

In the course Biopolymers students will be introduced to basic biopolymers used in medicine, cosmetics and pharmacy as well as to the targeted applications of these biopolymers. Basic information on structure, physico-chemical properties and biochemistry relevant to their target applications will be provided. Significant modifications of native biopolymers will be mentioned and the impact of these modifications on the final properties. The course also includes basic principles of analysis and control of biopolymers. During the course the students will be acquainted with the ethical problems of application and testing of biopolymers.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the Biopolymer course, the student will focus on the properties of the most important biopolymers used in medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics. Students will be asked about both the application and the raw material, so that the student understands the complicated correlation between the structure and the final application. The acquired knowledge will be further transferable to non-mentioned polymers. By generalizing the principles of application of these biopolymers, the student will be able to translate this information into practice and will form the basis for further professional development in the field of biological macromolecules.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of selected chapters from Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physical Chemistry and Biopolymer Technology.

Aims

The aim of the course "Biopolymers" is to provide students with a basic overview of significant biopolymers, especially polysaccharides and proteins. Emphasis is placed on applying these biopolymers in medicine, pharmacy and cosmetics. Students will be acquainted with the relationship of structure and application of individual important biopolymers and these bases will be expanded with the basic application principles of these substances in the living organism.
