The course deals with English for IT (as part of ESP) and covers majority of the pressing topics of ICT. The aim of this course is to make the students widen and grasp IT vocabulary, identify and apply the specifics of English for IT. They will be able to communicate (by all means), discuss, argue and defend their oppinions with the discourse community of IT specialist and do it on such level, so that they are able to analyze and interpret what the speaker of the discourse community is attempting to communicate through and they will also be able to exacly formulate their answers and illustrate their opinions.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will be able to:
- Use a wide range of IT vocabulary
- Apply newly acquired knowledge of grammar
- Communicate, argue, discuss, defend and formulate their opinions by means of English for IT
- Understand, analyze, translate, paraphrase IT texts
- Understand, analyze, translate, paraphrase IT listenings
- Understand, analyze, translate, paraphrase, follow and actively participate in conversations and discussions with the IT discourse community members

Passing of HPA1 course is recquiered to enter the course

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods include language seminars and homework. Students have to actively participate in classes.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

75% attendance and active participation at classes, fulfilment of given assignments.
Semester test and final exam are requiered to succesfully pass the course

40% - semester test - evaluates the level of knowledge one has acquiered during the semester
30% - written part of the exam - evaluates and asseses student´s abilities to apply the knowledge acquiered
30% - oral part of the exam - evaluates and asseses students communication skills

Course curriculum

Communication skills development, text analyss, speech training, specifics of IT English, reading practice.
Training and development of all the B2 CEFR level skills.
The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge of IT vocabulary, specifics of English for IT and make them practice conversational abilities in the field of IT. All language skills are practiced every week and they are linked to 12 topics, which cover the majority of the IT environment.

Aims

The course is aimed at the development of language competencies required by the students’ future professional environment. The aim of this course is to provide students with students the means, functions and style of professional language. Special attention will be devoted to IT terminology.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

The course takes over 13 weeks in the form of language exercises. Attendance at seminars is compulsory (75 %). Absence must be properly apologized. If the absence exceeds 75%, it must be compensated by students for missed hours.
