Course detail

Biopolymers

FCH-MAA_BAcad. year: 2021/2022

In the course "Biopolymers" students will be introduced with the basic biopolymers used in medicine, cosmetics, pharmacy and target applications of these biopolymers. Basic information will be given about the structure, physico-chemical properties and biochemistry directly relevant to their application. A significant modification of native biopolymers and the impact of these modifications on the final properties will be mentioned. The course includes basic principles of analysis and control of biopolymers. During the course, students will be acquainted with the ethical problems of application and testing of biopolymers.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course Biopolymers, students will understand the problems of relationships and characteristics of important representatives of biopolymers. Emphasis will be placed not only on the understanding of the relationship between primary structure and higher structures but also on the involvement of individual compounds in complex matrices, occurring in living systems. Selected examples will be able to derive general properties for that group of substances. Students will understand the evolution of biopolymers as well as you will be aware of the environmental implications of obtaining biopolymers. It also assumes basic knowledge of the ethics of the use of biopolymers.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students a broad topic of biocompatible and biodegradable polymers. Topics are of two kinds: focusing on specific usage with a list of appropriate biopolymers; focused on specific biopolymers, whose examples are the general principles applicable to a particular group of biopolymers. Emphasis is placed on the context and application potential of the individual biopolymers.
