Kinetics of chemical reactions. Thermal balance of chemical reaction. Water, structure, properties, pH, transport of water and water vapour in materials, the role of water in the formation of hard structure of building materials, its influence on thier properties and degradation. Chemistry of inorganic non-metallic materials - composition, properties and degradation. Chemistry and electrochemistry of metallic building materials, corrosion of metals and their protection. Chemical composition of wood, its properties and degradation. Chemical properties of polymers, their stability and degradation.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student gets the aim of subject under control, i. e. chemical reactions of the solid structure of inorganic binder forming, chemical properties of metals, and degradation and corrosion processes of building materials.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge on general chemistry, types of chemical bonds, reaction kinetics, dissociation, electrolytes, basic knowledge on electrochemistry, standard electrode potentials, basic knowledge on inorganic and organic
chemistry, chemical nomenclature, stoichiometric calculations.

Course curriculum

1. Kinetics of chemical reaction. Thermal balance of chemical reaction.
2. Methods for the investigation of building materials - chemical and structural analysis.
3. Water – structure, ionization, pH, substances content in water, and their effect on building materials. Porosity of building materials. Transport of water and salts.
4. Chemistry of gypsum and anhydrite binders, properties of hardened gypsum, and degradation.
5. Chemistry of lime binders, plasters and mortars, degradation, renovation of plasters.
6. Degradation of ceramics – composition, porous structure, crystallization pressure of salts in pores. Chemistry of glass, and corrosion.
7. Chemistry of cement and concrete. Composition, properties, hydration, hydration heat, water-to-cement ratio.
8. Chemical admixtures affecting the properties of building materials.
9. Degradation processes in concrete caused by atmosphere and aggressive solutes. Chemical properties of aggregates in concrete, degrading processes. Stability and degradation of fibre reinforcement.
10. CHemical and electrochemical properties of metals, corrosion of metals. Corrosion of steel reinforcement in concrete.
11. Chemical composition of wood, wood properties, degradation of wood.
12. Chemistry of polymers based on carbon and silicon chains. Degradation of polymers.
13. Basic mechanical properties of building materials in relation to the chemical basis.
