High Frequency Circuits

The content is the design of passive and active circuits from the discrete lumped and distributed elements up to GHz frequencies and introduction to the design of the radio-frequency integrated circuits.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Student will be able: (a) to design common radio frequency circuits in modern transceivers; (b) perform numerical calculations for given specifications and computer simulation for functionality verification.

Prerequisites

The student should be able to:
- explain basics of electronic circuits and electromagnetic waves and transmission lines (inductance, capacitance, impedance, reflection coefficient, Smith chart, standing wave ratio)
- analyze basic electronic circuits with passive components
- calculate with complex numbers and logarithms
- know the characteristics of the parallel and serial resonant circuits
- know calssical classes of amplifiers and calculate operating point circuits

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods include lectures, computer and practical laboratories.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Students obtain max. 30 points for the activity in labs during the semester. The final exam is composed of written and oral part for max. 70 points.

Aims

The aim of the course is to get students acquainted with the theory of analysis and synthesis of the modern radio-frequency transceivers.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Evaluation of activities is specified by a regulation, which is issued by the lecturer responsible for the course annually.
