Course detail

Hydropedology

FAST-BSA006Acad. year: 2022/2023

Subject Hydropedology focuses on interpretation of soil-water relations and their role in the protection of agricultural land. The basic form of teaching are exercises in which students get acquainted with the physical and hydraulic properties of the soil, hydrolimits and infiltration of water into the soil. In use of models in pedology students learn how to gather and analyze the resulting data from the available computer programs RETC (van Genuchten et al., 1991) and Rosetta (Schaap, 2003).

The beginning of the semester takes place in the fields and during the semester the pedological laboratory is visited.

Completion of the course is a written test and submission of all forms.

Institute of Landscape Water Management (VHK)

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students process measurements from the field and from the laboratory into protocols. This will give them a general overview of hydropedology issues.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of mathematics, physics, hydraulics and hydrology.

Co-requisites

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

According to the ECTS classification scale. Part of the points for the protocols and part of the points for the written test.

Course curriculum

1. Introductory lesson, work in the field (collection of broken and intact sample)
2. Work in the field: measurement with a Minidisk infiltrometer
3. Work in the field: measurement of infiltration by the two-cylinder method
4. Evaluation of measurements with a Minidisk infiltrometer
5. Evaluation of infiltration by the two-cylinder method
6. Evaluation of infiltration by the two-cylinder method
7. Soil hydrolimits - analysis of an intact soil sample
8. Hydraulic characteristics of soil: hydraulic conductivity
9. Hydraulic characteristics of soil: retention line
