Doctoral seminar 4 (GAK)

Study, and the acquisition and processing of current knowledge connected with the issues of the chosen topic from the field of specialization of programme geodesy and cartography with support from a supervisor, possibly with the aid of a supervisor who is a specialist in his or her field, or with the support of experts from the following institutions:
- the Faculty (for instance, from the AdMaS research centre operated by the Faculty),
- VUT,
- or external research and development institutions.
The performance of simulations or experiments related to the topic area of the doctoral thesis. Publication and presentation of the outputs of creative activities. The formulation of a semester plan of visits to professional and scientific events (seminars, workshops, conferences, congresses) and potentially study or professional stays at foreign scientific and academic institutions. Work on publishable outputs (contributions to proceedings, articles for professional or scientific journals). Regarding creative activities, it is advantageous to cooperate with industry or scientific institutions directly while working on projects.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Subject-specific 'added value' in skills, knowledge and competences acquired through the study of subjects. Smooth and continuous fulfilment of the tasks of the doctoral study programme. 

Prerequisites

Knowledges of university graduate in geodesy and cartography specialization. Practice is benefit.

Co-requisites

The use of earlier results from student professional activities for the continuous development of knowledge and scientific skills is welcome.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

In addition to lectures and seminars, continuous consulting, involvement in research activities, participation in conferences and verification of results in practice are used.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

A check is carried out on the compliance of the personal study plan with the actual results achieved, the status of examinations, publications, the preparation and results of the internship, the status and participation in research activities and the creation of the dissertation. If the essential criteria are met, a credit can be awarded.

Work placements are organized with the aim of sending the student to institutions or schools that have a similar/identical professional focus and where the student's professional skills and scientific abilities will be effectively developed.

Aims

The aim of the course is to ensure the smooth fulfillment of the individual study plan, updating of dissertation work, flexible response to changes in study conditions and motivation of the student to meet the deadlines of the individual phases of study.

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Recommended optional programme components

It is recommended to link research activities with foreign faculties and research organizations. The aim is to later link research within the EU to make this activity more effective.

Syllabus

1.–13. The student works on the practical part of their doctoral thesis for the State Doctoral Examination while working on his/her first project (in cooperation with a doctoral student from the 3rd year of the DSP with a related doctoral thesis topic). Provision of support to a doctoral student from the 1st year of the DSP with a related doctoral thesis topic in connection with the submission of his/her second project proposal. Preparation of a presentation of results the student has achieved in the research area of his/her doctoral thesis. The student develops a conception of the outputs of his/her project and the contribution of those outputs to industry and areas of science. Publishing activities (e.g. work on a contribution to a professional/scientific conference, or work on an article for a specialised/peer-reviewed journal). Participation in professional or scientific events.
