Introduction to Buildings‘ Design 1

Methods of building design with the consideration of an architectural concept - building typology and layout arrangement requirements. Acceptance of valid standards and regulations. The application of architectural and structural design principles, present economic relations, energy efficiency requirements and environmental demands. Design principles for barrier-free residential houses and their neighbouring outdoor spaces. Design of residential houses is completed in practical classes.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

To gain basic knowledge and experience in conceptual work within residential buildings design with regard to artistic and compositional requirements, acquiring and accepting typological principles, norms, regulations and specifications for barrier-free solutions of buildings.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of basic bricked, concrete, steel and wooden constructions. Basic demands of building services, thermal protection of buildings and building acoustics.

Co-requisites

Gain further knowledge of principles suitable constructions and details. Basic knowledge of thermal protection of buildings, building acoustics and fire safety of buildings.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods are specified in the article 7 of Brno University of Technology rules. Course lectures are accompanied by a presentation of current development projects and realizations. Students have an intranet access to electronic textbooks for the course.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Successful passing of the course requires completion of practice classes with the granting of credit from the subject based on the submission of corrected protocols, the successful completion of written and oral exams.

Aims

To gain basic knowledge and experience in conceptional work within the frame of projecting residential buildings. Out of regard for artistic and compositional requirements, acquiring and accepting typological principles, norms, regulations and specifications for barrier-free solutions of buildings and their exteriors. Concurrently to use of knowledge from the field of constructions, heat engineering, acoustics and fire protection.

Syllabus

1st– 3rd week:

Task: RESEARCH - rewiev

Work up research - rewiev on any family house (detached house) which you choose on www.archiweb.cz (you can use also other source where is presented whole project of detached house) and assess it from at least five aspects – e.g.:

  • placement on the site
  • orientation to the cardinal directions
  • analyse operational relations
  • access area of single room (bedrooms, living room, kitchen, sanitary facilities – WC, bathroom…), if need be also cubature
  • evaluate ergonomics of solutions of individual spaces
  • evaluate illumination of individual rooms
  • diverse kind of storage in whole house (for cleaning, clothing, shoes, foodstuffs, garden tools, garden furniture, hygiene supplies….)
  • analyse variety of colours, materials etc.

Compare with rules and standards (recommended literature, lectures…)

Complete with photos, pictures, layouts, sketches of new designed solutions.

Output: size A4 – ribbon or ringlet bookbinding (PDF)

4th – 12th week:

Task : DESIGN your ideal dwelling – architectural study

Family house – min. 4 + 1:

  • own design – image of your perfect family dwelling
  • without limitation of floors, shape of roofing…
  • placed at an ideal but real lot, including all room furnishing…

Pay attention to:

  • orientation to the cardinal points - situation of a building in terrain
  • functional structures
  • area, cubature (attics)
  • stowage space
  • parking (garage)
  • ergonomics (kitchen, bathroom, area of communication, cabinet…
  • variety of colours, materials etc

Output: size A3 – ribbon or ringlet bookbinding (PDF)
