Art Techniques – Drawing

FA-VK1-NAcad. year: 2022/2023

The course of drawing develops the essential skills to depict ideas in an independent and free way, without the dependency on any model or aid. This course focuses on architectural drawing - clear, explicit, aesthetic and accurate representation of an architectural situation, whether from memory or from a prepared observation. It develops the accurate perception of depth and proportion of space, understanding and use of perspective, drawing technique, composition rules, and aesthetic feeling. The course is divided into four blocks: introductory lecture, drawing and perception studies, drawing from observation, and the final work which summarizes the completed tasks. An integral part of the course are homework assignments, individual drawing reviewed at consultations, individual visits to selected exhibitions, and studying sources.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

The course of drawing encompases creative, observational and practising components, enhances their development, completion and directing of individual abilities of each student. It is essential to initiate a dialogue between a draughtsman and the drawing. Thus the students will learn to see and understand the results and potential of their own work, which will steer them in their further progress. It is a complex process which affects not only the skills, but also the perception, feeling and ability of expression, internal freedom, and phantasy.
The core of the course lies in regular work and continuous correction, as well as the final review of all works including the home assignments.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To be awarded the credits, students must submit the drawings from the practical classes from all thematic blocks including the final work and home assignments. Students will obtain specific requirements for all submitted works and the total number in written form at the beginning of the semester. For example, 12 drawings from the classes, 3 home assignments, colloquium on the selected exhibitions or other cultural perceptions.
Students get marks for the quality of submitted drawings and the development during the semester focusing on absorption or originality.

Aims

The aim of the course is to learn to draw in hand/sketch an architectural concept or situation which is factually correct and has aesthetic quality. The sub-aim is to learn how to evoke and develop an idea via the process of sketching, how to make it more accurate via drawing, how to cultivate the depicted phenomenon, how to capture the overall idea via drawing methods, and how to use the graphic methods as perspective, axonometry, and orthogonal projection. Some practical lessons are aimed to map the possibilities of drawing methods, to increase the sensitivity, and to enhance the imagination. Further aim is to cultivate the perception of the image of the reality and the representation of the reality, among other things by visiting the suitable exhibitions and studying sources.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Students will attend the introductory lecture and the compulsory practicals. Two absences in the semester are tolerated, excuses and more absences in case of serious cases will be discussed with the teacher individually.
Options to compensate for the absence - attend parallel practical classes, individual work on the drawings.
In the case of a student's apology and with approval of the subject guarantor, personal attendance may be substituted with online attendance in the classes.
