Digital Sculpture - 3D print 1

FaVU-1DS-ZAcad. year: 2022/2023

Students will learn the technology of 3D printing, its possibilities, and availble technologies. Checking/corrections of STL and OBJ data (Magics, alternative options of 3D models correction), preprocessing (Magics), dimensions adjustment, cutting the model, setting up the chamber, printing - the basic service, printer set up, additional storage in the chamber (saving the time and material), collision detection, post-processing.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After graduating this course students will be able to work independently with the 3D printer, they will understad the process of 3D prinintg, and will be able to make a flawless model in the STL format.

Prerequisites

Basic PC operation skills; ability to navigate in the virtual space; patience and interest in 3D technologies. Experience with 3D modelling software (Blender, Maya, Rhino etc.) is welcomed yet it is not necessary.

Co-requisites

Not applicable.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Combination of lectures and methodological and content management of students' independent work at workshops.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credit is awarded on the basis of attendance and active participation in the workshops.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction to the hardware and the software.
2. Checking the 3D model (STL, OBJ), errors correction (Magics), using the alternative available possibilities of STL files.
3. Preparation of the STL for printing, network reduction, cutting the model, labeling, setting up the storage in the printing chamber (Magics).
4. Printing (storage in the printing chamber, minimizing the printing costs (material and time), collision detection, enhancement of the printing quality, accuracy, setting up the printing quality (ZPrint, CatalisEX).
5. Printing and removing the model from the printer.
6. Service - replacement of printing materials, basic maintenance.
7. Post-processing - removal of the support material, cleansing, corrections of mistakes, mounting.
8. Monitored independent work on an individula project, mastering the whole printing process.

Work placements

Aims

The objective of this course is to introduce students to the 3D printing technology, which they will learn to use for the making of spatial objects and their furter use in their artistic work. Students will have the opportunity to have a hands-on experience with technology and thus will acquire the practical skills essential for independent work.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance in lectures - 70% min., workshops are mandatory.
