Printmaking - lithography

The course is conceived as a series of lectures and follow-up practical exercises, focused on lithography – a planographic printmaking technique. In this course, students will become more familiar with feather (ink) lithography, chalk lithography, lapped lithography, scratch lithography (mezzotint on stone) or autograph (overprint). Emphasis is placed on individual selection of hands-on activities. Within each class, students will become familiar with the lithographic press and workflow. The course will include the opportunity to work in the printmaking workshop during open hours. A portion of the class will be devoted to current trends and artists working with lithography.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

After completing the course, students will be familiar with the procedures and possibilities of lithography. They will be aware of the place of lithography in the context of contemporary art theory and practice.

Practical exercises, theoretical lectures, analysis of works, practical demonstrations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

The following conditions are set for the award of credit:
- attendance in class (2 permitted unexcused absences) or submission of an "extra" assignment
- submission of completed standard assignments
- in the credit week students submit a practical assignment according to the assignment formulated in the first third of the course. Each project will be discussed with the instructor.

1. – 2. Introduction of a specific technique: lithography
3. – 5. Creation and consultation of the design and selection of the appropriate technique
6. – 9. Implementation of the developed design in the chosen technique during the workshop hours
10. – 12. Printing of the matrix

Aims

The aim of the Printmaking – Lithography course is to offer students a basic orientation in the possibilities of planograhic printmaking on the basis of practical exercises focused on complex and technically demanding printmaking techniques. The course will enhance students' ability to think about lithography in the context of contemporary art. Emphasis will be placed on the mastering of technological procedures related to traditional printmaking techniques.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Classes take place in the printmaking workshop of the FFA BUT in the hours determined by the schedule. Minimum participation is 85%. Making up for missed lessons takes place after agreement with the teacher in the form of individual consultations.
