Research Paper Seminar 1

The course consists of three parts: seminars, workshops, and individual tutorials with the research paper supervisor. In seminars, student learn the basics of academic writing, examine challenges posed by writing about practice-based research, and practice their writing skills through individual and group assignments. Regular workshops facilitate the writing process through group feedback sessions and discussions about the obstacles that students encounter while writing. Individual tutorials with the research paper supervisor focus on specific issues arising from individual research projects and take place based on individual needs of students and with a view to the completeness of their work.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students are able to implement a research plan on a relevant topic and write a research paper based on that topic in keeping with high standards of writing in the field of contemporary art and design.

Prerequisites

Completion of the courses Research Through Art 1, and Research Through Art 2.

Writing skills seminars, workshops with feedback sessions and discussions about the wring process, tutorials with the research paper supervisor.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Credits are awarded by the research paper advisor based on tutorial attendance, work towards the research paper, and on the condition of more than 70% attendance in seminars and workshops.

Course curriculum

1. Styles of academic writing, writing strategies, academic vs. creative writing.
2. Basics of academic writing, citation styles.
3. Writing process: deciding on a title, writing an abstract, choosing the right structure — IMRaD, non-academic and experimental approaches, the relationship between form and content.
4. Ethical considerations: inclusive language, accessibility — thinking about the reader, “situated knowledges.”
5. Writing as storytelling, storytelling as worldbuilding.
6. Publishing.

Aims

The aim of the course is to support students during the process of writing of their research paper.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Seminars and workshops take place at the premises of the FFA BUT according to the course schedule. Tutorials take place at dates and times determined by the tutor. Students are required to participate in scheduled tutorials and have attendance of more than 70% in seminars and workshops.
