Introduction to Clinical Medicine

Introduction to Clinical Practice introduces students to clinical terminology, principles of internal diseases, symptoms of selected major internal diseases, medical documentation and work at the bedside. Furthermore, with a method for obtaining anamnestic data and overall view of the patient. The disease case reports of individual systems and the use of selected instrumentation in clinical practice in the investigation and treatment of patients according to individual systems are demonstrated.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will learn basic clinical medical terminology. They will be able to understand the basic examination techniques in internal diseases also with a possibility of the use of instrumentation for each type of disease. They will know the typical clinical symptoms of pathologies. They will be able to respond in an acute, life-threatening situations.

Prerequisites

For the study of the subject is required knowledge gained in courses Fundamentals of Anatomy and Histology, Biochemistry, Physiology and Pathophysiology.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

This is a one semester course. Attendance at seminars is monitored. Absence in seminars - one excused absence is accepted, the frequent absence is substituted after consultation with the teacher. The theoretical knowledge obtained in seminars are verified in practical clinical lessons. The course is terminated by an exam. Wording of questions is posted in the IS. The student will extract one question that has two sub-questions, exam is oral. The classification is according to the university system.

Aims

Students are familiarized with the introduction to clinical medicine, including basic medical terminology. After completing the courses, the student will be able to understand the basic problems of clinical medicine and be able to communicate with the staff in a medical environment.
