Studio Practice 2

The course aims to familiarize students with the recording process - editing techniques, additional editing (artificial reverb) and the final processing of a record – the mastering of the record and documentation. The course includes practical exercises, computer skills, familiarity with specific music software and learning basic functions and techniques, personal music recording, voice recording, fades, etc. Students will also learn to perform a comparative analysis of recordings of different artists of the same piece (comparing the quality of the interpretation, processing methods of records, room acoustics, etc.).

Learning outcomes of the course unit

The student will be able to:
- use artificial reverberation in the creation of audio recordings,
- use techniques for mastering in the creation of the final record,
- create documentation of musical recordings,
- analyze recordings of various artists of the same piece,
- operate computer programs for recording and processing musical recordings,
- create a professional speech recording.

Prerequisites

The knowledge of basic concepts of musical acoustics, tempo, expression and dynamic signs, and musical instruments tuning is required as well as musical intervals, scales and modes, chords and basic harmonic connections, and timbres. Students who enrol on the course should be able to analyze song regularities, assess the implications for the interpretation, describe musical instruments in terms of creating tone and techniques, and create instrumentation study for combinations of instruments.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods depend on the type of course unit as specified in the article 7 of BUT Rules for Studies and Examinations.
- Lectures provide the explanation of basic principles, complemented with practical illustration of work in studio and with audio samples.
- Exercises support practical acquiring of themes presented at lectures in form of practical work in recording studio. Active participation of students is needed.
Participation at lectures is recommended. Participation at other ways of instruction is checked.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

Evaluation of study results follows Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT and Dean's Regulation to the Rules for Studies and Examinations of BUT. Credit is given for creation of individual sound recording.

1. - 3. The procedure of recording – methods of editing, additional record adjustments (artificial reverberation, etc.).
4. - 5. Final record processing - mastering.
6. Documentation of music recordings.
7. - 8. Comparative analysis of recordings of different artists of the same piece.
9. - 11. Using a computer for one’s own recording.
12. - 13. Speech recording, fades.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with the recording process, additional record editing and finalizing in terms of the sound director.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

To obtain the credit it is necessary to complete at least 10 exercises during semester. Other forms of the checked instructions are specified by a regulation issued by the guarantee of the course and updated for every academic year.
