Advanced Technical English

The aim of the course is to practise grammatical features typical in technical translations and scientific texts, supported by expanding specialised technical vocabulary skills.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will expand their technical vocabulary skills and they will be able to understand the differences in meaning of technical terms based on the context and to use them correctly. Students will learn to understand formal and stylistic nuances of various technical texts. They will also be able to produce and organise ideas in a coherent technical style. They will polish their knowledge of grammar and they will be able to apply it to various technical texts.

Prerequisites

The expected and required entrance skills are at the B2 CEFR level.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Teaching methods comprise reading and analysing of technical texts, technical listenings, translations, students´ presentations, conversation and active participation in classes.

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

70% presence, continuous assessment throughout the semester
Semestral test (max.40 points, min.24)
Exam: technical presentation during the semester (60 points max.)

The course focuses on advanced grammar and vocabulary and its practical usage at the B2-C1 CEFR level, specialising in electrical engineering and information technology texts.
