Course curriculum

The goal of studying this subject is to acquire basic knowledge of technical materials and to gain connections between them
chemical composition, internal structure and useful properties. The content of the course provides students with an overview of
materials processing technologies used in industrial practice.
Students will gain an overview of the nature of the physicochemical processes that are decisively involved in the complex useful properties of materials and their processing technologies. This knowledge is necessary for an idea of use
materials in engineering practice.

1. Introduction to the issue of engineering materials
2. Crystal structure of metals
3. Phases and phase diagrams
4. Iron-carbon alloys
5. Heat treatment of metals
6. Production of steels. Non-alloy steels
7. Alloy steels
8. Cast irons and cast steels
9. Non-ferrous metals and their alloys
10. Non-ferrous materials
11. Mechanical properties and their testing I
12. Mechanical properties and their testing II
13. Non-destructive testing of materials

Work placements

Not applicable.

Aims

The objective of course is to provide knowledge on the composition, structure, and treatment of materials in relation to their properties that are relevant for treatment technologies and design applications. It enables understanding the essence of the above processes and their mutual causal relations. The subject creates theoretical and practical knowledge of the basic methods of material testing and operational diagnostics.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Awarding the course. Participation in practices is mandatory, must be properly excused absence. Unit credit is conditional on having participated in all exercises and worked out the reports from exercises in keeping with the teacher's instructions. Absence from exercises must be accounted for.
