Modern Metallurgy of Non-ferrous Metals and Alloys

Calculations of thermodynamic equilibrium and the equilibrium constant for elements in the polycomponent solution and the gases in non-ferrous metals and alloys. Production and properties of non-ferrous metals based on nickel, cobalt and copper. Thermophysical properties of non-ferrous metal alloys, basic melting units and the treatment technology of non-ferrous alloys. Decarburization and degassing of non-ferrous metals and alloys. Nickel and titanium alloys, chemical composition, structure and properties of these alloys. Metallurgy of nickel and titanium alloys, melting units and methods for controlling their crystallization.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Application of thermodynamic equilibria in calculations that are necessary in the production of steel and in secondary metallurgy. Exploitation of simple kinetic relations in the course of metallurgical reactions. In-depth knowledge of applying thermodynamic data from databases.

Prerequisites

A good knowledge of the subject matter of the courses Metallurgy of steel, Theory of metallurgical processes, and Theory of foundry processes.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Students will get acquainted with the theoretical foundations of metallurgy of non-ferrous metals and alloys based on nickel and cobalt. Students will also gain practical experience with calculations of thermodynamic processes taking place in molten nickel and cobalt and alloys of these metals, including the solution of their interaction with the furnace atmosphere and refractory materials of crucibles of metallurgical aggregates.

Aims

The objective is to prepare the student for independent calculation work in the area of modelling the processes taking place in the production of steel and in secondary processing. Prediction of manufacturing processes.

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

The lecturer assigns to students independent work. Attendance at lecture is required.

3. Furnaces for melting of non-ferrous metals and alloys, induction and arc furnaces, vacuum furnaces.
4. Methods of secondary metallurgy.
5. Vacuum metallurgy, decarburization and degassing of liquid metals.
6. Dissolution of elements, vaporization of elements in vacuum.
7. Reaction of metals and alloys with refractory materials.
8. Metallurgy of nickel alloys, melting and metallurgical treatment of nickel alloy in vacuum.
9. Metallurgy of cobalt alloys, melting and metallurgical treatment of cobalt alloy in vacuum.
10. Metallurgy of copper alloys, melting and metallurgical treatment of copper alloy in vacuum.
