Safety and Risky Behavior

The course is aimed at the security aspects of society and the risky behaviour of humans in stressful situations. It introduces the basics of legislation in the field of national security, and the crisis management of protection against unexpected events. In other aspects, it focuses on the impact of internal and external factors on individual and group behaviour, behaviour and decision-making. It deals with specific dangerous situations, and the issue of victims and the prevention of risky behaviour.

Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will gain new knowledge and skills in the field of risky human behaviour in stressful situations, preventive methods and associated legislation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Tuition takes place via lectures and seminars. The lectures focus on the explanation of basic principles, the methods of the given discipline, problems and example solutions.

A written test.

Course curriculum

1. Introduction. Safety and state security policy, security advice. Overview of the basic legislation in the sphere of security policy and procedures to be followed in the case of an emergency.
2. The basic legislation in the field of IP, environmental protection, and emergency planning.
3. Safety and danger, threat and risk. Identification of sources of risk. Dangers and hazards related to an object or event. Behaviour and experience in extreme situations. Age criteria, vulnerable groups in society.
4. The decision-making process, mistakes and errors in decision making. Decision-making under risk and uncertainty.
5. Individual and group behaviour. Crowd psychology. Model behaviour. Aggression, anxiety and fear as responses to stressful situations, altruism and absence of help. The basis and causes of stress, stressors and defensive mechanisms.
6. Psychological burden. Personal potential and the perception of stress in stressful situations.
7. PTSD: causes, symptoms, development.
8. Specific threatening situations. Attacks, kidnapping and hostage-taking.
9. Personality and risky behaviour. The motivations behind human behaviour. Pathological forms of behaviour.
10. Groups of people under greater threat in traumatic situations.
11. Communication in difficult situations, non-verbal communication. Mediation as a method of conflict resolution.
12. Ways of helping victims. Victims – harmed individuals. Behaviour of victims when under threat.
13. Prevention. Types of preventive measures. Prediction. The importance of external and internal factors in the emergence of risky behaviour.

To gain an overview of the topics of safety and state security policy, risky behaviour and its expressions and causes, as well as the options for the prevention of threatening situations.
