The exam tests the ability to use language independently at B1 level, with an emphasis on the needs of successful communication in everyday situations. The written part tests knowledge of grammar and general vocabulary acquired in previous study. In the oral part, students need to prove they are able to express themselves spontaneously, enter unprepared into conversation on topics that are familiar, react to questions, express and explain their ideas and thoughts, compare and contrast alternatives, etc.

Learning outcomes of the course unit
A student who successfully passes the GEN exam understands the main ideas of comprehensible input on topics that he/she regularly encounters in everyday situations, in the workplace, while studying or visiting places where English is used as the main language of communication. A successful exam candidate can engage in conversation, describe facts, events and goals, and can briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans. The scope corresponds to B1 level.
Prerequisites
Knowledge of grammar and vocabulary at B1 level corresponding to the compulsory literature and the needs of an independent communication is regarded as a minimum to pass the exam.

Separately registered exam following previous language study.
Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes
The exam has a written and an oral part and tests the knowledge of General English at B1 level. The written part tests the knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, while the oral part tests the ability to engage in conversation spontaneously without prior preparation. It also assesses fluency of speech, pronunciation and the ability to use grammar and vocabulary covered in the compulsory literature or a similar course book on B1 level. The student is required to score at least 50% in both parts of the exam.
