Learning outcomes of the course unit

Students will consolidate general vocabulary and grammar structures for the workplace at the intermediate level and extend them in the context of academic topics.

 

Prerequisites

The course is intended for students who are familiar with the language at pre-intermediate level. They are expected to have the knowledge and skills corresponding to the course English Skills.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods

Language instruction as an extension of basic professional curriculum.

 

Assesment methods and criteria linked to learning outcomes

To pass this course it is necessary, apart from active participation in the class and individual home preparation, to pass the final test (at least 60%). There is a possibility for the student to resit the test.

 

Course curriculum

Introduction - study materials, learning strategies concerning foreign languages. studying at BUT

Topic 1: Education/Entrepreneurship - road to success (listening for contrasting ideas, critical thinking: ranking options, grammar: compound and complex sentences)

Topic 2: Science - laws of science (listening: making inferences, vocabulary: word forms, critical thinking: distinguishing between similar words, grammar: present perfect, present perfect continuous)

Topic 3: Anthropology - accidental inventions and discoveries (listening for signal words and phrases, vocabulary: collocations with prepositions, grammar: indirect speech)

Topic 4: Engineering - consequences of progress/technology (listening for causes and effects, critical thinking: making appraisals, vocabulary: idioms, grammar: conditionals)

Topic 5: Evaluation, testing

Aims

The course will develop students' language skills they have acquired at secondary schools and in the course English Skills and extend them in the context of academic topics. Also dealt with is ESP. It is focused on practical, everyday communication for the international workplace. /"intermediate" level/

 

Specification of controlled education, way of implementation and compensation for absences

Attendance at seminars is systematically checked by the teacher. Students are allowed to miss 2 seminars. As long as the number of missed seminars is higher, additional condition may be set up by the teacher in justified cases in order to meet the course credit requirements.
