Building Elements 1

FA-PS1-KAcad. year: 2023/2024

To understand a building as a part of general space with the hierarchy of systems and systems of structures. Structure of buildings with simple structural systems, their interconnections and principles of use. Transfer of general experience to the system of building elements and the main structures. Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credit test will be awarded upon completing the compulsory attendance, submission of all assignments and sitting two tests where the minimum pass score is 15 out of 30 marks. The dates of submission and the tests are announced by the teacher in a written requirements document at the beginning of the semester and are obligatory.
To successfully complete the course, students must pass the oral exam which comprises a theoretical and a practical part (drawings).
The final evaluation uses ECTS grading scale.
Compulsory attendance with two excused absences, more absences may be compensated upon agreement with the teacher in another seminar, or could be excused in case of serious health problems.
Lectures are not compulsory.
In the case of a student's apology and with approval of the subject guarantor, personal attendance may be substituted with online attendance in the classes.

Aims

The aim of the course is to understand the structural system in buildings. To know the relation between the load bearing structure and layout design, and the boundary conditions of forces imposed on the building structure.
To learn the principles of how to design various structural systems, vertical and horizontal load bearing structures, ways of designing vertical communication, cantilevered and recessing structures and the foundation.
  • Students will practice application of specific structural solutions on a simple building.
  • Students will know how to use the principles of wall structures from various materials.
  • Students will know the principles of horizontal structures from various materials.
  • Students will know how to design vertical communication from various materials and structural systems.
  • Students will know the principles on how to build a building on flat foundations.
  • Students will know how to design effective protection from ground dampness and radon penetration from the subsoil.
