Flight Planning and Performing

The basics of flight planning and execution of flight for VFR and especially for IFR are discussed. During the course, students will get acquainted with the procedures of determining the weight of the aircraft, its balancing, preparation of documentation for the flight, the performance of the aircraft in all phases of flight, working with flight manuals and all aspects of flight, including emergency management.

Basic knowledge of secondary-level applied mathematics, geometry and physics.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Lectures and seminars are mandatory in this form of study. The condition for granting the credit is 80% physical participation in lectures and seminars. Absence classes can be replaced by independent study and independent processing of assigned tasks.


Lectures and seminars are mandatory and attendance is checked by recording in the class book (min. 80%). Reasoned absence may be replaced by consultations and in the form of individually assigned tasks and projects for independent processing, which must be submitted no later than during the course-unit credit week.

Aims

The course objective is to make students familiar with basics of flight planning and execution of flight with aircrafts of performance class B, A, for VFR and especially for IFR. To teach students to practically use theoretical knowledge from this subject in pilot training and subsequently in practice. To prepare students to take theoretical exams to obtain the ATPL (A).


Students will acquire knowledge and skills of flight planning and performing, which are necessary for a professional pilot in the civil air traffic.

Syllabus

  1. Mass and balance of the aircraft, terminology, center of gravity, MAC, limitations.
  2. Load-terminology, payloads and load, Nomenclature, aircraft weight control, weighing procedures, documentation.
  3. Determination of aircraft center of gravity, centering, centering limits according to flight manuals.
  4. Influence of the position of the center of gravity on the performance of the aircraft, Weight + Balance Sheet, consequences of overload.
  5. Performance of class B airplanes, characteristic speeds, flight manuals.
  6. Performance of class A airplanes, characteristic speeds, take-off, length of interrupted take-off, balanced take-off length, climb segments.
  7. Performance of airplanes of class A, cruising flight, descent, approach, landing, flight planning in terms of flight time and endurance, ETOPS.
  8. VFR and IFR flight planning rules, documents and sources of information needed for flight planning and execution, fuel plan.
  9. Flight planning under IFR, work with map materials, preparation of documents for the flight.
  10. Procedure for planning a flight under IFR to a specific destination, the use of current meteorological and operational information, processing of documents for the flight.
  11. ICAO ATC flight plan, types of flight plans, flight monitoring, aircraft crew cooperation with ATC.
  12. Minimization of the impact of air transport on the environment, procedures and measures, perspectives of further development
  13. Operating procedures from the point of view of economics and efficiency of air transport, development trends.

  1. Terminology in relation to the content of the subject, practical work with literature and references.
  2. Weight and load, work with flight manuals of specific aircrafts.
  3. Determining the position of the center of gravity of specific aircraft, work with flight manuals.
  4. Work with flight manuals of specific aircraft in relation to weight, center of gravity, determination of aircraft performance.
  5. Preparation of flight by performance class B aircraft with respect to weight and operating conditions.
  6. Preparation of flight by performance class A aircraft with respect to weight and operating conditions.
  7. Work with AIP, finding out published parameters of the airport, including procedures.
  8. Work with documents in flight planning for VFR and IFR.
  9. Work with documents in flight planning for IFR with emphasis on working with map materials.
  10. Work with navigation and planning software in flight planning.
  11. Planning a flight under IFR with a specific aircraft on a specific route, completing and submitting a flight plan.
  12. Simulation of the planned flight, application of measures to reduce the negative impact on the environment.
  13. Credit work, course-unit credit award.
