Course detail

Boilers and Heat Exchangers

FSI-9KVTAcad. year: 2023/2024

The course is structured into several areas:
The first area is devoted to the properties of fuels (namely biomass and wastes) and their influence on the concept of combustion spaces and boilers themselves.
The second area is focused on the operational requirements of the proposed equipment and its projection into the equipment design.
In the third part, students will be acquainted with a detailed thermal calculation of the combustion chamber and additional surfaces of the boiler, with the basics of hydrodynamic, strength and aerodynamic calculation. Conceptual questions of design of various types of boilers, construction and calculation of boiler heat exchangers, materials used in boiler construction will be discussed.
The fourth area is fully devoted to advanced heat exchanger design, especially tubular and plate heat exchangers. The students will acquire the principles of design of choice and design of heat exchangers.

Entry knowledge

Thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

the activity on the consultations is evaluated, the exam is oral.

Aims

The aim of the course is to acquaint students with advanced knowledge necessary for designing boilers, combustion chambers and heat exchangers. Upon completion of this course, students should be aware of the impact of operational requirements and properties of used fuels on the design and operation of combustion rooms as well as the overall concept of boilers and will be able to basic thermohydraulic design of the boiler and heat exchanger.
Students will be able to apply theoretical knowledge especially from thermomechanics, hydromechanics and heat and mass transfer when applied to combustion equipment and heat exchangers. After completing the course, students will be able to think about influences influencing the design and operation of power equipment and heat exchange apparatuses and they will be ready for the design and development of these equipment.
