Introduction to Bachelor Thesis - CHM

FCH-BC_UBP_CHMAcad. year: 2023/2024

The students will learn what basic parts of scientific texts are and what their content is. They will get to know literature sources and learn how to make background research. They will repeat and improve knowledge regarding data processing and data presentation. The acquired knowledge will be tested within review of bachelor's thesis (BT) written in previous years. The theme of BT will be similar as the actual one of the students. The work will be advised from the point of completeness and content of particular parts, intelligibility and typographic rules, relationship between the title and the scopes to the selection of testing methods, measurement conditions, the form of processing and evaluation of data including formulation of conclusion.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Classified credit is marked after attendance of all seminars and obtaining classification from all tasks (the portion of particular classification on the final credit is mentioned in parenthesis in percentage): presentation of rules, instructions and standards regarding elaboration of final subject work and its defense (30%), the test of typographic rules (20%), review of bachelor's thesis (35%), presentation of the own bachelor's thesis (15%).
The attendance in the seminar in a range of two hours per week is compulsory for students of the presence form of study – the attendance is evidenced. Unexcused absence may represent the restriction to credit the subject. Combined form of study is supported by E-learning system with syllabus, study materials and lecture presentations; information about tasks and their evaluation is available too. Written test and presentation of currently solved bachelor's thesis takes in mutually agreed term.

Aims

To grave on students' mind that
- structure of all specialized/scientific texts (protocols, thesis, scientific articles) is the same,
- it is necessary to import all its sections of proper content for completeness and intelligibility of the text,
- except technical/scientific accuracy and exactness of presented data it is necessary to present results in a standard form (Figures and Tables), and
- at the end it is necessary to amend the whole text according to valid typographic rules.
The unit form of the text facilitates orientation and intelligibility considerably.
After completing the course students will know how to structure scientific text – what are basic parts and what is their content; they will know how to work with databases and how to cite references. Furthermore, they will know how to present data in a form of Tables and Figures, what should be their size and where they are places in the text.
