Advanced Analytical Chemistry

FCH-BA_AACHAcad. year: 2023/2024

This course aims to introduct students to the modern methods and techniques of analytical chemistry. Teaching is structured in the following thematic areas: Physical aspects of analytical methods. Organic chemistry in modern analytical methods. Principles of senzors and biosenzors, their use in different areas (environmental analysis, renewable energy sources, medicine). Practical use of senzores. Modern, fast and simple use of "Lab on chip" for routine analysis. Principles and instrumental methods in imaging techniques based on mass spectrometry, their potential and practical use. The principles of modern isotopical analysis, the use in the environmental analysis, forensic analysis or medicine.

Offered to foreign students

The home faculty only

Entry knowledge

Knowledge from the course Analytical chemistry I and II, knowledge from Physics (electricity, magnetism), knowledge from Physical chemistry I and II.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

As part of the course evaluation, students prepare a seminar paper on a topic of their choice. On this subject will be followed by a presentation and discussion.
Attendance at lectures is recommended, but not checked. Consultations during the semester will be possible for students of the combined form of study. Consultations are also provided to full-time students on request. If will be necessary, the lectures will be organized online.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with an overview of specific methods used in analytical chemistry in the field of  senzors, lab on chip, izotopic analysis and imaging by mass spectrometric methods.
By completion of the course the student will gain the following knowledge and skills:

1. They will know in depth the principles of operation of sensors used in the field of environmental and forensic analysis.
2. They will know the principles of advanced analysis in the field of imaging methods using mass spectrometry and in the field of isotope analysis.
3. They will be able to imagine the functioning of analytical laboratories using the so-called lab on chip, their practical use for routine analysis.
4. They will be able to choose the optimal method for the needs of routine and automated analyzes but also very advanced analyzes in imaging techniques in different fields of analytical chemistry.
