English for IT

The course is aimed at the development of language competencies required by the students’ future professional environment. Seminars are focused on the means, functions and style of professional language in IT and practising its correct use in professional contexts. IT topics may be discussed in their relations to humanities and business. Speaking, listening and reading (skimming and scanning) skills are practiced. Professional topics for discussion are based on the textbook materials and are aimed at the development of specific vocabulary learned within listening and reading activities.

Entry knowledge

A student has passed BPC-AN4 English – Intermediate 2 exam at UJAZ FEKT. This exam corresponds to the level B1 CEFR level.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

75% attendance and active participation at classes, fulfilment of given assignments, test, exam.
The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

The course takes over 13 weeks in the form of language exercises. Attendance at seminars is compulsory (75 %). Absence must be properly apologized. If the absence exceeds 75%, it must be compensated for.

During CoVID-19 pandemic the form of education may be subject to change and be altered to online form.

Aims

The aim of the course is to develop all language competences and the presentation of the language functions characteristic for the professional language in IT.
Understanding specific technical information in both spoken and written forms.
The ability to communicate in specific situations related to the development and presentation of devices and their parts and components. The ability to express one´s ideas and discuss the issues and current trends in technology.
A student is able to discuss the basic subjects of IT
he/she describes technical functions and applications and explains how the particular technologies work
lists and describes various types of technical problems and causes of faults and is able to discuss possible solutions
verbalizes mathematical expressions and graphs
is able to work with professional texts and find the required information
has the knowledge of professional language functions and their manifestations and uses them correctly
