Course detail

Telecommunication Systems

FEKT-MPC-TLSAcad. year: 2023/2024

The course introduces the principles of telecommunication systems, especially in the area of telephone exchanges. It covers hardware and software solutions, signalling systems and ensuring additional services. It focuses on the products of traditional manufacturers with closed source code and, in particular, on progressive telephone exchanges with open source. The theoretical parts are always accompanied by practical examples of implementation, in particular progressive exchanges with open source. Laboratories focus on exchanges with open source: Asterisk, Freeswitch, YATE and products of traditional manufacturers: Siemens, Alcatel, Panasonic and others.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge and skills acquired in Teleinformatics Bachelor study programme are expected. Students who are going to attend this course should have full knowledge of the configuration and diagnostics of IP protocol based networks. They should have basic skills in the Linux command line, should be able to configure and monitor IP interfaces, check the running processes, terminate the process, etc. They should also have knowledge and practical experience of IP telephony, SIP and RTP protocols, etc.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

At the end of each laboratory exercise the teacher checks the results of the given assignment and awards points. Experience gained in Asterisk Open Source PBX configuration is verified by the individual project. The points awarded for laboratory exercises (a maximum of 35 points in a semester) go to the evaluation of the examination and thus also to the assessment. The exam is written. The maximum number of points is 65. The overall evaluation is the sum of points for laboratory exercises and the written exam. The minimum required value is 50 points; the maximum value is 100 points.
Attendance at laboratory exercises is compulsory, justified absence can be made up after prior arrangement with the instructor. The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with prospective telecommunication and information systems, their hardware, software and services.
Students who complete this course will be able to:
- explain the concepts of the convergence of telecommunications networks
- explain and compare the properties of circuit-switched and packet-based networks
- explain the concept of private branch exchanges (PBX) and list their utilization
- list the advantages and disadvantages of PBXs of traditional manufacturers with closed source code and open source PBXs
- list the type of PBX interfaces and their utilization
- explain the concepts of the numbering plan and call routing
- explain the issue of routing calls from the public networks DID, DISA, IVR
- explain the issue of routing calls to the public network and between the PBXs, trunk groups, ARS, LCR, ENUM.
- list the dominant platform of open source PBXs and field of application
- choose a suitable open source PBX platform and realize the configuration of progressive platforms
- explain the concepts of subscriber and trunk units, specify their types, characteristics and functions
- list the possibility of integration of the circuit-switched technologies into the open source PBX
- realize the configuration of the FXS, ISDN BRI, PRI, E1, Ethernet interfaces in open source PBX
- list and describe the signalling method used in circuit-switched technologies and be able to configure it in the open source exchanges
- describe signalling system No. 7 and be able to implement and configure it in open source exchanges
- list IP telephony standard protocols and be able to configure them in open source exchanges in different scenarios
- list the IP telephony security options against attacks and eavesdropping, be able to configure them in open source exchanges
- list the IP telephony proprietary protocols and explain their utilization in PBX of traditional manufacturers such as Alcatel-Lucent, Panasonic, Siemens
- explain the issue of providing QoS in IP telephony and realize its implementation in open source exchanges
- describe the structure and functionality of public telephone exchanges such as EWSD and S12
- describe the public numbering plan, routing between operators, international and emergency call routing
- list the additional PBX services and be able to implement them in the open source exchanges
