Teoretical elements of Composite Materials

FAST-DJ64Acad. year: 2023/2024

The present structure of material industry, development of composite materials, classification of composite materials into basic types and their characteristics. Definition of composite materials the explanation of composite behaviour. The variables which define the properties of composites. The structural distribution of composites – production problems. Fibrous composites - long and short fibres. Unidirectional composites - the relative proportion of phases (volume and mass proportion of components, basic calculation equations). Longitudinal strength and rigidity, stress-strain diagram under tensile stress (graphs, basic calculation relations). Thermal dilatation and transport properties (graphs, equations for basic calculation). Carbon, steel, glass and polypropylene fibres. Composites reinforced by strip stiffeners. Particle composites and their classification. Concrete with polymers – binders, fillers, aggregates, admixtures and modifiers. Production and properties. Polymer-cement mortars and concrete. Impregnated concrete. Utilization of mortars and concrete with polymers. Mortars and concrete with bitumen - asphalt, asphaltic bitumen, aggregate admixtures. Bituminous mixtures, asphalt concrete, cast asphalt. Binders for bituminous mortars and concrete, classification, properties. Fillers for bituminous mortars and concrete, properties. Admixtures to asphalt-concrete.

Entry knowledge

Knowledge of building materials, knowledge of building materials physics, mechanics, concrete technology, plastics.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Extent and forms are specified by guarantor’s regulation updated for every academic year.

Aims

Obtaining elemental teoretical knowledge in composites materials. Introduction to new composite materials used in the building industry. Understanding of composite effects of materials and of possibilities which offers the composite material. Introduction to principles of composites design and utilization. The student can on the base of obtained results make the optimal choice of the composite material for actual application and he is able to define the demanded properties of composite material and conditions for its use. He is able to predict the properties of designed composite material.
