Studio – project

FA-ATK-AEAcad. year: 2024/2025

The course Structural Studio builds on the studio work in the previous years of study. For the work in Structural Studio students choose one of their architectural concept designs and individually elaborate the project documentation of the given building (smaller apartment building, public amenity building, office building, big house with business premisses) required for the building permission.
Parts of the project:

  • architectural and technical part: design of the building as a whole, selection of structure and materials, design of structural details.
  • specialisation: concept design of sewer system, internal distribution of water system, central heating and energy efficiency assessment.
The building project must be feasible.
Architectural design is tightly connected with the technical design of the building – every change caused by different technical solution must be performed with regards to architectural concept of the design in cooperation with the studio supervisor (architect), and the technical worker from the Department of Engineering and to the level specified in the course description. This assignment is handed to the students at the beginning of the work. Further, students participate in at least one of the studio critiques. Absences from the critiques cannot be compensated, they can be only excused for serious reasons. Compensation of compulsory consultations is possible via individual consultations upon the prior agreement with the supervisor.

Aims

To verify student´s ability to elaborate a building design of building object in an adequate extent, according to the suitable architectural concept design from one of the previous studios.
  • Students will acquire the ability to elaborate architectural and operation design of several types of buildings and with a full range of requirements on operation with relevant number of functional sections.
  • Students will acquire the ability to elaborate building design project of a complex building.
  • Students will be able to analyse the context of the area (local masterplan, cadastre of real estate etc.).
  • Students will be able to analyse the boundary conditions affecting the building object (utility networks, geology etc.).
  • Students will learn actively work with technical standards and valid legislation.
  • Students will learn to critically review their technical design of building.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The assessment is based on the submitted semestral work. The work is submitted in printed and electronic form in the PDF format. The work assessment forms 100 % of the grade, although the continuous work and participation in consultations might be reflected.
Students must participate in one consultation as specified by the supervisor a week; compulsory participation in the critiques and the final public presentations. Students must submit the project meeting the conditions specified by the supervisor in the “Work Assignment”, and meet the submission deadline (specified in the internal document “Study Rules”). In the case of a student's apology and with approval of the supervisor, personal participation may be substituted with online participation in the studio.
