Architecture of 20th Century in the USA

FA-A20-TAcad. year: 2024/2025

Half of the lecture series will deal with the rich work of Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959) and his school. In a broader context, it will provide the possibilities of interpretation of modern and post-war American architecture in comparison of Wright's spatial principles with the works of Louis Sullivan, the Austrian school of modernism, Adolf Loos, Le Corbusier, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and other architects, or the possibilities and limits of the concept of organic architecture. Next, the course will deal with the challenges and problems of American architecture after 1945, whose protagonists are Philip Johnson, Richard Neutra, Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown.

In the "Architecture and Urbanism" study program, the subject is included in the group of theoretical subjects.

Aims

The aim of the course is to give students an overview of the work of five architects and one female architect who represent the key figures of North American architecture of the 20th century. The course wants to show his interpretations of their work and place it in the context of the development of 20th century architecture.
- The student will know the seminal works of Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, Philip Johnson, Richard Neutra, Robert Venturi and Denis Scott Brown.

- The student will get a general overview of American architecture in the years 1900-1950 and their leading protagonists.
The student will get an overview of the basic historiography of American architecture in the 20th century. 

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The assessment is based on a written test which verifies the knowledge of the presented material. The exam test comprises 100 % of assessment.
Students must attend 50 % of the lectures.
In the case of a student's apology and with approval of the subject guarantor, personal attendance may be substituted with online attendance in the classes.
