ADHD – Intimately About Sustainability

The course is based on sharing up-to-date knowledge with experts – both practitioners and academics – who have something to say on the topics to be discussed in the current semesters. The discussion will be complemented by lecture and study inputs (e. g. common readings) into the sub-topics. The thematic focus of the course will change continuously, but the focus on graphic design in relation to sustainability remains.

Previous experience with the theory of graphic design or visual culture is not required.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

A credit is awarded on a basis of active participation in classes (2 permitted unexcused absences).
Teaching takes place in the classrooms of the FFA BUT in the hours determined by the schedule. Attendance is compulsory (2 unexcused absences allowed). Higher number of absences can be compensated by submitting an alternative assignment after agreement with the teachers.

Aims

The aim of the course is to review the publicly and professionally discussed topics related to design and sustainability and to look together at our own approach, possible alternative visions and suggestions on how to challenge those general topics or how we already work with them.
Completion of the course should help students strengthen the ability of analytical thinking, conduct interdisciplinary dialogue and articulate a critical view of the challenges of graphic design and its practice in the present.

Syllabus

The syllabus – the exact composition and format of individual seminars – is specified before the beginning of each semester in which the course is taught, and is based on the current focus and definition of the main thematic blocks. For the year 2022/2023 the following topics will be discussed: Graphic Design and Gender, Graphic Design and Industry, Graphic Design and Technology, Graphic Design and Educational Programs. These general topics will be rendered more specific through the selection of guests and seminar resources.
