Course detail

Galleries and Art Market in Practice

FaVU-GPTSUAcad. year: 2024/2025

Primarily oriented towards the mechanisms of the art market, the course will offer students a basic insight into how gallery operations and the art business operate. Consideration will be given to the domestic scene with regard to its setting in an international context. We will look at who buys what art, why and where, we will also discuss the self-presentation of the artist and how pricing works - we will use specific cases to show what factors really influence the price of a work of art. We will learn about the different founding structures and operations of galleries, auction houses, art fairs and other entities, and students will meet direct participants in their operations, especially private gallerists and private collectors. The course will be equally divided between theoretical teaching, in the form of lectures, and practical seminars consisting of visits to specific subjects and discussions with experts. The course will also emphasize the acquisition of information that will help students in their own self-presentation.
