Installation as a Medium of Creative Practice

The topic of installation is approached from different angles in this course. The focus will be on the development of independent creative practice of the students. Through an internship in one of the partner galleries, the students will learn about the technical aspects, possibilities and limits of exhibiting. The course will include at least two field trips to relevant exhibitions (Vienna, Ostrava, Prague...). Significant space will be devoted to discussions on related topics such as working with space, working with light, handling pre-existing artefacts in an installation, site-specific installations, the use of technology in an installation, etc.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Credit will be awarded on the basis of participation in classes and field trips and upon completion of gallery practice and upon submission of a conceptual exhibition project with emphasis on an installation plan.
Teaching takes place both in FFA BUT classrooms and in the "field". Participation in seminars (80%) and field trips is compulsory. Students should participate in the installation of at least one exhibition during the semester as part of their gallery experience.

Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the possibilities of the medium of installation through a hands-on, creative experience and to integrate this experience into their own creative practice.
Students will learn how to use installation strategies in their creative practice, as well as practically participate in the installation of their own exhibitions. With experience gained in the course, they will be able to communicate their plans and requirements clearly to the gallery and be aware of the technical possibilities and limitations of exhibition making.
