Classical Printmaking: Technology - History - Practice

The course is conceived as a fusion between theoretical and practical education. The triadic model of education is constructed as follows: 4 x history, 4 x contextualization, 4 x workshop. Specific graphical techniques will be brought to the historical context, further to the current context within contemporary art and its reflection and subsequently verified at a practical level. The main objective of the course is not to master graphics techniques, but to gain insight and ability to justify the importance of traditional media in the digital era and the ability to work with them in their own art.

Entry knowledge

Artistic skills and knowledge of the theory and history of art demonstrated at the entrance exam to the master's degree. Previous experience with graphical techniques is not necessary.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

The following conditions are set for granting the credit:
- active participation in lessons (2 unexcused absences allowed) or submission of a task based on alternative assignments in agreement with the speakers
- Submission of completed tasks
- the degree of achievement of the subject's objectives is also considered

The lessons take place in the KTDU FaVU VUT classrooms and in the graphic workshops of the Drawing and Graphics Studio of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the BUT in the hours specified by the timetable. Minimum participation is 85%. The replacement of missed lessons takes place in agreement with the teacher in the form of alternative assignments.

Aims

The aim of the course is to connect theory and practice in the field of traditional graphic techniques. Students will become acquainted with the "return to materiality" in contemporary art. An essential aspect is the awareness of the fact that this fundamentally conceptual turn, historically requires also a brilliant mastery of proven handicrafts. However, the next goal of the course is to alleviate postulated rigidity, since only knowledge of the area or violation of its rules can mean a creative impulse. Of course, the turn towards materiality can be understood very broadly, but in the case of classical graphics it is mainly related to the possibilities of printing technologies spread out over time, such as intaglio, relief printing, screen printing or offset. Thanks to the introduction of practical procedures in the historical and theoretical context, the students will become acquainted with the possibilities of the classical media not only as a historical relic, but especially as a functional means for their own creation and interpretation of contemporary art.
Familiarization with the basics of graphic techniques in theoretical, historical and practical terms, as well as their media overlaps and potential for students' own practice.

3.1. Screenprinting
3.2. Classical graphics: intaglio, reliéf printins, litography - an example of one selected techniques
3.3. Excursion in offset printer

Credit week - final hour (colloquium): Variations on Fluxkit - the student submits a practical task according to the assignment formulated in the first third of the course. Each project will be discussed with the teachers (or with the guests).
