Contrastive Analysis of Professional Texts

In lectures and seminars the course offers a deeper look at different ways of expressing different layers of meaning meaning in English and Czech through the comparison of particular texts. The texts chosen are used to demonstrate the differences between particular linguistic means in general, and their style specific features as well. The lecture always introduces linguistic phenomena which are then practically dealt with in the seminars.

Secondary school level knowledge and lower intermediate knowledge of English are required.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Both the examination and exam will use an in-class writen tests to test the abiloity of the students to realize and analyze the differences between English and Czech texts. The examination focuses on the ability to analyse and compare grammatical structure of English and Czech texts.The exam tests the ability of students to apply theoretical linguistic methodology and knowledge in practice. The maximum number of points for the examination is 40 and the maximum possible number of points for the exam is 60.

The content and forms of instruction in the evaluated course are specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course and updated for every academic year.

Aims

The course offers an insight into different problems concerning the diverse ways of expressing meaning in Czech and English. Students will be able to get to know, understand and test in practice the variety of both languages starting from grammar through pragmatic aspects up to cultural dimensions of given languages. The course will futher perfect students’ acquaintance with different genres and sub-genres of prosfessional discourse by their practical analysis.
Student is able to:
- compare Czech and English linguistic means and apply this knowledge in translation and everyday usage of the foreign language
- recognize, define and correctly use different features of professional discourse, either in Czech or in English
- better understand, translate and analyze the meaning of English texts
- to use correct grammar equivalents in translation.
- analyse the usage of stylistic and grammatical means in diverse texts.

Rozdíl mezi analytickými a syntetickými jazyky, obecné důsledky pro vyjadřovací možnosti angličtiny a češtiny. Jak se projevuje v odborných textech kultura spojená s jednotlivými jazyky. Pád v češtině a angličtině, Nominalizace, slovotvorba. Výpovědní modalita. Vid slovesa. Trpný rod. Systém slovesných časů. Syntax I - typy vět a souvětí. Syntax II – slovosled, složitá syntaktická spojení. Stylotvorné prostředky odborného jazyka. Rozdílné slohové útvary odborného jazyka a jejich specifika.
