Course detail
Communication Systems 1
FEKT-BPC-KS1Acad. year: 2024/2025
In the first part of the course, students become familiar with architecture of common analog and digital communication systems (block diagram, basic functions). Then, the building blocks operation and methods of signal processing (source coding, encryption, channel coding, equalization, modulation, synchronization, etc.) will be described in detail and examples of the building blocks application in current communication systems will be given. In the next part of the course, methods of sharing of communications resources (multiple access, frequency spectrum allocation, methods of signal transmission) will be presented and the principle of spread spectrum and OFDM systems will be explained. At the end, the effects of the transmission environment on signal propagation and methods of their elimination (fading, Doppler effect, diversity) will be described.

Aims
The graduate is able:
1. describe architecture of common analog, and digital communication systems,
2. explain basic building blocks operation,
3. apply some algorithms of signal processing,
4. explain the effects of the transmission environment and methods of sharing of communications resources,
5. orientate oneself in the use of partial building blocks in current communication systems.
