Design of Electronic Circuits

FEKT-BPC-NEOAcad. year: 2024/2025

The course covers basic passive and active components for electronic circuits. It describes the principles, properties and applications of real components and introduces their basic portfolio. The course presents basic circuitry for analog circuits with bipolar and unipolar transistors and operational amplifiers. For these circuits, their parameters, properties and areas of application are presented. Emphasis is placed on how to select appropriate types of components. The course also describes the principles of electronic circuit design in terms of power supply issues, minimization of parasitic phenomena and cooling of individual components. Circuit design fundamentals such as PCB design, component cooling issues, overvoltage and overload protection are also described. Exercises are aimed at practicing practical design of basic circuit types and selection of appropriate components.

Entry knowledge

Good knowledge of the topics discussed within Electrical Engineering 1 and 2 is required, and a basic precursory insight into the physics of semiconductors may help the students substantially to reach successful completion of the course.

Work in the laboratory is subject to a valid "instructed person" qualification, which students must obtain before starting the course. Information on this qualification is provided in the Dean's Directive on Student Training in Safety Regulations.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Total number of points is 100, including 30 points in written tests in exercises and 70 points in final exam. To obtain examination it is necessary to obtain 15 from maximum 30 points in test. Requirements for completion of a course are: to gain examination and to perform a final written test. Minimal necessary achieved total mark to pass this course is 50 points.

Aims

The aim of the course is to introduce students to a portfolio of basic electronic components, their properties and applications, basic analog circuits with transistors and operational amplifiers and power supply solutions for electronic devices. Students will be introduced to the practical principles of electronic circuit design including methods of heat dissipation from power components.

Upon completion of the course, the student will:

- have a basic understanding of a portfolio of passive and active components for analog electronic circuits.

- be able to select specific appropriate component types for a proposed application based on catalogue data

- know the application principles for different circuit elements

- be able to apply typical circuitry with bipolar and unipolar transistors and operational amplifiers

- be able to design simple electronic analog circuits including their power supplies and verify the characteristics of the designed circuit using a circuit simulator

- be able to find and eliminate possible problems in circuit and PCB design.
