The course aims to develop English language competences on level C1 of CEFR. The focus is on formal oral and written communication in the academic and professional environments in terms of both grammar and lexis as well as stylistics and pragmatics. The students are presented with the most common genres in the academic and professional discourse (an abstract, a scholarly article, a popular science article, a manual, a CV, a covering letter, a project proposal, a presentation, etc.), analyse their stylistic features, practice writing them, and learn how to reference cited materials.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course
Homework assignment (36 points; minimum 18 points): submit several written assignments (a manual, a formal email, an abstract).
Project (14 points; minimum 7 points): give a popular science presentation
Written exam (50 points; minimum 25 points)
75% attendance is required.

The student is able to:
- write well-structured academic and technical texts using appropriate style
- correctly cite utilized source materials
- react effectively in terms of written professional and business communication
- understand academic and technical texts on the native-speaker level
