Entry knowledge

The knowledge of the Bachelor degree level is required, and the knowledge of the radiofrequency and microwave techniques, and of the digital signal processing are recommended.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Evaluation of the activities is specified by a regulation issued by the lecturer responsible for the course annually.

Aims

The goal of the course is to acquaint students with the satellite communication and navigation systems, technology of the satellites, and methods of localization using GNSS.
The graduate is able to: (a) write down the communication equation and explain the meaning of the individual parameters; (b) characterize the parameters of a satellite orbit and explain the procedure of calculations of the satellite location prediction; (c) define basic types of satellite orbits and evaluate their advantages and disadvantages; (d) clarify the perturbation effects of the satellite motion; (e) enumerate the satellite link budget in the uplink and downlink, in case of clear sky and during the rain conditions; (f) describe basic features of the satellite communication systems providing fixed (VSAT, DBS, Intelsat, Eutelsat) and mobile (satellite telephony - Iridium, Inmarsat, Thuraya) services; (g) explain the principles of the satellite navigation; (h) describe the basic features of the global satellite navigation systems GPS, Glonass and Galileo; (i) and to apply the GNSS in real systems.
