Aims

The aim of the course is to familiarize students with the contemporary professional English terminology in the fields of sustainable and smart building, facility management and BIM. Students will be introduced to implementation of foreign terminology and methods in Czech conditions.
Students will be able to apply their knowledge in short professional texts in English.

Syllabus

1. BIM: Fundamental terminology in Building Integrated Modelling. Introduction to complex (computer) modelling of building life cycle. 2. Building energy concepts: Introduction to fundamental terminology encountered in both European and Czech standards and laws. European requirements on energy performance of buildings (EPBD). Optimization of energy consumption during the life cycle of a building. Assignment of a part of building energy certification (based on students' bachelor projects) in English. 3. Multi-criteria assessment of buildings. Environmental impacts of construction industry and other human activities. Reasons and options for multi-criteria assessment of buildings. Discussion of examples. Assignment of a partial multi-criteria assessment of students' bachelor projects in English. 4. Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA): A method for evaluation of environmental impacts. 5. Consultations. Assignment of presentations describing students' master projects. 6. Renewable and alternative energy sources. Introduction of available energy sources and their applications in buildings. 7. Natural construction materials. History and contemporary state-of-art applications. 8. Smart buildings, cities and regions. Introduction of contemporary "smart" concepts and their application in construction industry. 9. Facility management: Definitions, descriptions, terminology development. 10. Classification. Presentation of students' master projects. Final submission reports and presentations.
