Hydrology

Course is focus on theoretical and practical learning of basic hydrological knowledge and applications, which are:

  • Description of basic the water cycle.
  • Theory of the rainfall - runoff process in a watershed and rainfall - runoff transformation.
  • Description of basic climatological measures and meteorological measurement in a river basin.
  • Description of basic river basin geographic measures and methods of an evaluations.
  • Water-level gauge and water discharge measurement.
  • Introduction to mathematical probability and statistic in applied hydrology.
  • Hydrological data processing, time series in hydrology.
  • Introduction to stochastic hydrology, theory of stochastic processes.
  • Water courses and river network and extreme flows.
  • Simulation and prediction models of rainfall-runoff processes. Introduction to rainfall-runoff modelling.
  • Fluvial processes and sediments.
  • Ground water, springs and aquifer flows.

Entry knowledge

Basic knowledge of higher mathematics, physics, probability theory and statistics, basic knowledge of hydraulics. Basic and extended knowledge of MS Excel.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

To evaluation of Hydrology course the practical session and examination have to be pass. Assessment from practical session awards for an active participants and elaboration of exercises. Examination evaluates theoretical and practical knowledge.

Aims

Basic knowledge of water in nature and natural water cycle. An overview of basic hydrological measures and their monitoring and measurement. Quantification of hydrological variables and their relationship. Rainfall - runoff modelling, introduction to stochastic hydrology, prediction of water stages and flows. An information on water bodies according to EU legislature.

  1. Introduction, basic terms, river basin, rainfall-runoff process.
  2. Climatological measures - precipitation.
  3. Climatological measures - atmospheric humidity, evaporation.
  4. Geographical measures of a river basin.
  5. Water level and water discharge measurement.
  6. Statistical analysis of hydrological data.
  7. Approximation of empirical distributions by theoretical distributions used in hydrology, regression models.
  8. Analysis of hydrological time series, basic of stochastic hydrology, artificial discharge series.
  9. Derivation of discharge series, determination of annual flow, introduction to extreme discharges.
  10. Methodology of evaluation of maximum and minimum discharges.
  11. Prediction of water level and discharges, basic types of models.
  12. Fluvial processes and sediments.
  13. Ground water, springs and aquifer flows.

  2. Average total rainfall in the catchment.
  3. Rainfall intensity evaluation.
  4. Determination of theoretical rainfall intensity in a small catchment.
  5. Snow melting - Degree a day method.
  6. Hydrometric evaluation.
  7. Time series analysis and statistical processing of the real flow serie.
  8. Time series analysis and statistical processing of the real flow serie. 
  9. Generation of synthetic flow series.
  10. Maximum flow determination from the measured data.
  11. Maximum flow determination in the gauging profile of a small basin.
  12. Minimum flow determination from the measured data.
  13. Final output evaluation of practical session.
