The course presents the fundamentals in room acoustics and daylighting in buildings. Knowledge of this subject will be practically used for the following study - in seminars, projects, master degree projects.

Aims

Fundamentals in room acoustics, determination of air-borne and impact sound insulation index for building constructions, design of rooms and their interiors with respect to reverberation time, determination of requirements for indoor acoustic comfort and design of building protection against exterior noise.
Methods for the evaluation of visual comfort in buildings, daylighting and insolation of buildings.

Syllabus

Acoustics 1. Acoustic waves, sound field. 2. Physiological acoustics, basic notions, loudness level and loudness. 3. Measurement of sound, frequency band, frequency band analysis, assessment of noise, hygienic limits. 4. Outdoor acoustics, attenuation due to distance, air attenuation, meteorological conditions, vegetation attenuation. 5. Attenuation of thin and thick barriers, overall attenuation. 6. Indoor acoustics, diffuse sound field, components of acoustic field. 7. Absorptive structures, membranes and oscillating plates, Helmholtz resonators. 8. Air-born sound insulation, Watters method. 9. Structure-born sound insulation, rating of structure-born sound insulation. Daylighting 10. Insolation, requirements for insolation. 11. Photometry. 12. Daylighting in buildings, indoor illuminance, winter overcast sky, daylight factor, components of daylight factor, transmission of light through windows. 13. Daniljuk’s nomograms, Waldram’s diagram, BRS nomograms, mean value of the overall daylighting factor, correction for geographical orientation, designing windows, quality of daylighting, qualitative and quantitative requirements.
