Course detail

Communication Technology

FEKT-CZV-KOMAcad. year: 2024/2025

The course deals with the following topics: network technologies and protocols, communication models, information transmission, reasons for using networks, basic network structure, network types, architecture of communication systems, ISO/OSI reference model, TCP/IP network model. Principles of communication techniques – multiuse of paths, two-way communication. Analysis of the roles of the different layers of communication models with respect to ISO/OSI and TCP/IP - physical layer, link layer, network layer, transport layer, session layer, presentation layer and application layer.

Entry knowledge

Students who are going to attend this course should be able to:
- use several numerical systems and conversions among them,
- explain and use elementary units common in the area of information and communication technologies (ICT), e.g. data size,
- use elementary terms from the ICT area, e.g. operating system.
Work in the laboratory could be conditional on a valid qualification, which students must obtain before starting the course. Information on this qualification is given in the Dean's Directive on familiarisation of students with safety regulations.

Rules for evaluation and completion of the course

Up to 30 points are awarded for work in laboratories (points are obtained for individual tasks, tests and individual project). The condition for credit is fulfilled attendance, defending the project and obtaining at least 15 points.
Up to 70 points are awarded for the written examination. In order to pass the course, it is necessary to obtain a total of at least 50 points (the sum of points from the labs and the exam).
Attendance at laboratory exercises is compulsory, properly justified absence can be made up after after prior arrangement with the instructor.

Aims

The aim of the course is to provide students with an orientation in the areas of basic types and structures of communication networks intended for data transmission and also in the techniques of information transmission used in them.

Study aids

Study materials are available in the course e-learning.
